bookmark keyboard shortcuts in chrome

Here’s a really simple way to launch your favorite sites with a simple keyboard combination. To set it up, type: chrome://settings/searchEngines in your address bar. Find where it says "Add a new Search Engine" and fill in the site’s name, the combination you wish to use, and the URL.

After you add your bookmarks, simply type it’s combination in the address bar and press enter. Voilà! You are taken right to the site. I prefer to use the shortcut CTRL+L to go right to the address bar, but opening a new tab or clicking it directly work well too.Here is how I have my sites set up, to give you an idea of what it looks like.

This simple trick has made my web browsing a lot faster! Often, its even faster than clicking the bookmark itself -- and its definitely faster than typing the entire site address. resolutions that stick

How many times have you made a list of New Years Resolutions and forgot all about them after January? I’m pretty sure we’re all guilty of that one. Even if you did complete 1-2 things on your list, I bet you didn’t follow through with all of them.

Here’s how you can check off everything on your list this year.

Be Specific - You’re more likely to go through with a goal like “Read for 30 minutes each day” than “Read more”. Make sure you break down each item so it is as concise as possible.

Limit how many - Most people tend to make really intimidating lists(myself included). If you’re going to fill up a whole page, you might as well skip the list entirely. Its pointless to have 101 goals if you don’t even complete half of them. Instead, limit your list to 10-25 things.

Have a game-plan - Determine when and how you’re going to complete each thing. Grab a notepad and brainstorm!

Be Realistic - Which goal would you be more likely to complete: “Go to the gym every day” or “Go to the gym at least twice a week”? That’s not to say you shouldn’t have ambitious goals, but they should be things you are capable of.

Accountability - I found this INCREDIBLE site that's perfect for documenting progress as well as keeping myself accountable. It puts all your goals on a nice list and lets you check them off as you complete them. It also has a beautiful little meter that lets you know how close you are to finishing.

holiday recipes

I’ve been doing a lot of baking lately, like most people around this time of year. So I thought I would share some of my favorite recipes with you all. I typed them out in Google Docs, so you can click on each image to view the recipe.

custom themes with Gmail's new look

The previous gmail look let you make your own theme, but now that it's been redesigned, there isn’t a way to do that yet. This is a quick tutorial on how you can create your own, using a custom color. I will do a followup on how to use a background image too, if requested.

Step 1 - go here(or open up your image editor if you prefer) and choose your color.

Drag the circle and move the slider around until you find the perfect shade.

Once you are done, you will see a six letter/number code in the box. Copy it, because you’ll need it in a minute.

Step 2 - go here, find where it says download, right-click and choose save as. Save it somewhere familiar like your desktop or documents folder.

Step 3 - find the file you just saved. It should be called Custom color.user. Right-click the file, and choose “open with - notepad”. Now you will see a bunch of confusing looking code, don’t let that intimidate you. You are only replacing one small section of text.

Remember that 6 letter/number code we copied a few minutes ago? Find where it says PUT YOUR COLOR HERE, delete that and paste your color there.

Step 4 - Put the # symbol right in front of your color code. It should look like this when you are done(although the code itself will be different, depending on which color you picked in step 1).

Step 5 - Punch CTRL and S at the same time to save your file. Now open Google Chrome, and drag your file into the middle of your window.

When you see a little box in the bottom-left part of your screen, click continue. One more box will pop up, click install.

If you have any concerns about installing it, don’t worry. It does not install a program on your computer and it can’t track you..its just like installing a browser extension or addon(except it doesn’t run in the background).

note: if it doesn't look right when you open Gmail, go into settings and try different themes until you find one that looks right with your new color.

faster gmail

Gmail is my very favorite email service. Its fast, easy to use, and looks great. However, you can make it even better with a few tweaks.

delete unwanted emails

This is probably the biggest speed factor. The more emails you have, the longer it takes gmail to load your inbox. Large attachments can take up tons of free space. There are two ways to find and delete large emails. Method 1 is to search gmail for “has:attachment”. That will bring up every email with a file attached. Method 2 is using Find Big Mail to search out your biggest messages. Both are pretty straightforward, so try them both and see which you prefer.

disable unnecessary labs

Labs can take a while to load, even though most of them are useful. Best thing would be to disable them all, but if you can’t live without them, just delete as many as possible.

decrease max. message load

Go to settings/general, find “maximum page size” and change it to 10 or 20 instead of 50+.

use basic attachment features

Still in general settings, at the very bottom of the page you’ll find the attachment section. Select “basic attachment features” instead of advanced. Advanced attachments require flash to work, slowing things down.

don’t always use https

General settings, browser connection, check the box that says “don’t always use https”.

enable new gmail theme

It loads a little faster than the rest, since it doesn’t contain any graphics. Plus its a lot better looking. You can find it mixed in with the rest of the Gmail themes.

use a direct link instead of typing “gmail”

Change your Gmail bookmark or shortcut to this link to skip the default browser checking operation: http://mail.google.com/mail?nocheckbrowser

That about sums it up. There are a few other things, but they aren’t significant enough to include. If you want to do tweak some more, you can just go through settings and disable anything you don’t need or use. Also, if you don’t care about looks and don’t mind a few less features, you can use basic html gmail for double the speed.

Monday is Caleb's 13th birthday, so we thought it'd be fun to spend the day Shooting and fishing in Arkabutla, Mississippi. The fishing didn't work out, since we ran out of time, but we got to shoot quite a bit. We had an awesome time!!

Dad and I took several pictures and videos, and I put together a Picasa album and a Youtube playlist so you guys could see how much fun we had. Even if you aren't interested in guns or shooting, you'll at least get some humor in seeing me almost fall over when shooting a 12 gauge shotgun. You have to admit, its pretty funny. LOL

avoid being hacked

I chose this topic because it seems like email hacking has been increasing a lot lately. I know several people who have been hacked in the last 6 months, including myself. One of my sister’s good friends got hacked last week and her entire blog was deleted. Every post, follower, and comment was erased. She now has to start all over again! Hacking stinks. Here’s how to keep it from happening to you.

strength + variation

Is your password strong enough? You can check it here right now. Even if it was strong, keep in mind -- if you use one "strong" password for everything, all it takes is one site being compromised and the hacker has access to every site you're a member of. If your password was anything less than strong, or if you use one password for several sites, you should be worried. Here's the closest you can get to a fail-proof password. [note: I first read about it here]

First, choose a password base. Lets say your current password is “Password”(I sincerely hope not). Stick a random symbol in the middle of it. Then, pick another number/symbol for the end. Lastly, add the site name that the password is for. Using this method, here’s what your passwords for Google, Facebook, and Etsy would look like.

Pass#word@google
Pass#word@facebook
Pass#word@etsy

All you have to remember is the base Pass#word. Now instead of having a weak password, its nearly un-hackable. Its not necessary to use a super-strong password for every site, just the ones you store information in like Google, Facebook, Dropbox, Paypal, eBay, etc. You can stick with your usual password for sites that aren't important.

other helpful notes

Don’t share your password with anyone. Always remember to log out when you’re on a public or friend’s computer. Never store your password on your computer or online. Don’t write it down. Use Gmail for the best protection(When my Gmail account was hacked, I was alerted immediately, and my account was locked until I recovered it by phone and reset the password. That’s service for ya!).

Here are pictures from the Blue Wing Angels air show I was at 2 weeks ago. It was super cool! Most of the time, when a jet went by you(and we were very close, we had front row seats), you didn't even hear it until it was past you. That's how fast they were -- faster than the speed of sound! Not to mention the ground shaking noise! Thankfully, the noise didn't last long since they whizzed past so quickly.

I also got a horrible sunburn. I felt like a Sunday roast, cooking in the crock-pot ALL day long! Only I didn't get lightly browned. All because silly me didn't think to wear sunscreen, since it was overcast when we left. Live and learn! =)

As you may have noticed, Girls of Grace is looking pretty different. Beside the overall theme/design change, there are also several new features.

(1) You can now scroll infinitely and view ALL my posts. No more clicking "Older posts".

(2) You can search my blog in the top right corner.

(3) Last but not least..you can view my blog 7 different ways! At the top left corner of the blog, you can select which look you want. Try them all and see which you like best!

All these changes are because of Blogger's new "Dynamic view". You can learn more about it here and here.

Well, I made it! A whole week without procrastination. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. Constantly having the mindset of do it right now really keeps you on top of things. There were several times when I really wanted to do it later, but I kept telling myself that it wasn't an option. Sure, I messed up a couple times -- I’m human ya know! But I managed to learn from my mistakes and finish out the week.

Also, after thinking about it, I decided to keep going. Who says I have to start procrastinating again tomorrow? If I can stop putting things off for a whole week, I can do it for the rest of the year and for every year after that.

Did anybody else try the challenge this week? If so, how did it go for you?

I have a bad habit of procrastinating, and I can be pretty lazy sometimes. For instance, I know I need to sweep the kitchen floor. Its one of my chores for the month. But right now I’d rather practice music. And music is important too, right? I have all day to sweep the floor. Besides, it can’t be that dirty, I swept AND mopped only 3 days ago! I’ll just save it for after supper, it’ll need it more by then anyway.

Guess what? It never got done. After supper I got busy and forgot all about the floor. That’s how it is with a lot of things. By the time I get to it, its way overdo and the job has become twice as hard.

According to my recent poll, 73% said they struggled with procrastination. I guess its just easier to put something off than it is to jump in and do it. However, I think most problems are easier to solve than you think. Procrastinating is one of those problems. The only way to stop procrastinating is to stop procrastinating! Yep, you knew that was coming! But its true, the only way to get things done is to just do them. Right away. Without stopping to think about it or make a list of excuses.

I know I’m speaking to myself, I do it as much if not more than the rest of you. So here’s what I’m going to do. For the next week, starting RIGHT NOW, every single time I have something to do, I’m going to force myself to do it immediately. Whether I like it or not. I may mess up a few times, and I might even fail completely, but I’ll never know until I really give it a try. I’ll be posting again next Tuesday to let you all know how it went. You’re more than welcome to join me if you're willing to try it.

a better kind of to-do list

starting -
I think most of us probably use to-do lists on a regular basis, but are they working for you? A typical to-do list usually looks something like this.

1. Email Bob
2. Write blog post
3. Finish chores
4. Exercise
5. Work on some graphics
6. Edit pictures
7. Start book report

By the end of the day, does all of that get done? Maybe 2-3 things, but you probably didn’t complete all 7 tasks. Here’s why. When you make a to-do list, most things are written too generally. Vague to-do lists seem longer and can be intimidating. For instance, which sounds easier, clean house or pickup dirty laundry? See what I mean? You’re more likely to get started faster if you write clear, specific tasks. Like this.

1. Invite Bob to dinner Sunday
2. Post vacation pictures
3. Sweep kitchen floor
4. Take a quick walk
5. Finish up blog header
6. Edit flower pictures
7. Read about House Sparrows on Wikipedia

finishing -
Now, in addition to having definitive “missions”, you should eliminate the unnecessary. The example I gave is a good weekly to-do list, but its too much for one day. Evaluate your list. Look at each task and ask yourself, “Does it really need to be done?”. If not, cross it out and move on. For instance, I could probably remove “edit flower pictures”. That is something that may need to be done in the future, but isn’t imperative today.

design -
Clean up your sidebar! Everyone hates clutter, and nobody wants to spend a coon's life waiting for your blog to load. Get a theme with subtle colors, you shouldn't have to put on sun glasses to read a blog! Leave plenty space for content, and use a simple font -- fancy fonts make things hard to read. Also, make sure the font color contrasts the background considerably, black on white or vise-versa. You don't want us all going to the eye doctor 'cause we spend all day squinting at your text, do ya??

posts -
When in doubt, leave it out! Short posts are better than incredibly long ones. Lets say somebody is scanning their dash, and they see two posts. One post is really short and one post is really long. Usually, that person will read the short one without leaving the dashboard, and will disregard the long post(they don’t want to spend all day reading about how you lost your favorite shoe). 100-300 words is usually a happy medium. Also, the amount of posts you make is important. Its something I definitely need to work on, so I’m speaking to myself when I say post at least once a week. If you have a post idea anytime in the week, write it down so you won't forget it.

music -
Me, oh my. Please be kind to your readers and turn off autoplay. Music is great, but when you have 10 blogs open at once, and every one is blaring something different, its not great at all. Most people like to play their own music while blogging, at least I do. Leaving the music gadget off your blog completely will help our hearing and speed up your blog loading time.

photos -
Rule of thumb: 6 or less of the very best. Pick a couple really good ones, and leave it at that. Nobody wants to see the blurry or grainy ones anyway. Set the photo size to x-large when posting, if you can. Larger pictures are much better than small ones.

Hope that gives you some ideas! Go take a look at your blog and see if it needs some cleaning.

If I could describe my little munchkin' in one sentence..it would be this.

She never stops moving!

She does everything at 90 miles an hour or faster- she's not even still when she's sleeping!! She even manages to talk with the same enthusiasm. ;-)

Here are 9 fun facts about our little 9-year-old.

{1} Her favorite colors are purple and pink
{2} She lost her first tooth at age 6.
{3} She is extremely strong! All that moving keeps her little muscles as hard as steel(seriously, she even beat Miriam, her then 13-year-old sister, in an arm wrestle!). She can do pushups, pullups, and even a chinup or two.
{4} She's a very fast runner! She can outrun anybody her age and even some who are older.
{5} She is our little prayer warrior. She loves to pray for meals when Daddy isn't, and gets terribly upset when she misses bedtime prayers(she makes us pray all over again)
{6} Her tummy is never full! She is always hungry.
{7} She's a Daddy's girl and has many, many nicknames(they range from a sweet name like cutie-pie to a food name like Olive). We invent new ones every week, much to her dismay.
{8} She loves to go places - anytime, anywhere.
{9} She has a big sweet tooth! She's always asking me to make fudge, cowpatties, or cookies...and has a big weakness for any kind of candy.

- Hunting with my Dad at 5:00 in the morning. Walking a mile in heavy waders through the woods to get to the best spot, then wading through icy water to fetch the ducks(we didn't have a dog) when Daddy shot 'em. We almost never left empty handed, and I used to love lugging my Dad's shotgun back(my brother prefered to carry the ducks, since I wouldn't touch them without hand-sanitizer or a nearby sink) to the truck.

- Hard church pews. Grew up sitting on them in our country church(since I was three), and I'm still not partial to the soft-cushion ones at the church we're visiting. LOL

- Driving through the State of Tennessee(my home state) on trips. I absolutely love Tennessee and wouldn't want to move for anything!! We're in the West part right now, but I would love to move farther East where the Mountains are(you'll know why if you've ever been there!).

- Going to the donut shop every Saturday(until I was 12 or so and it burned down) and ordering the same thing every single week. I still (to this very day) order one plain glazed and one Chocolate glazed. Some things never change! =)

- Tent Meeting every September. Now, if you're not a Baptist and haven't ever been to one, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. I'll try to explain. Camp meeting = 4+ hour preaching services outside(in a very large tent) behind the church, sitting on the ground (or metal chairs if there's enough of them), morning and night services beginning at 8:00 and ending around midnight, and lots of bug spray.

- Camping in the Smokey Mountains(near Knoxville). Get to see lots of bears, cook over a fire every night, hike the beautiful mountains, and walk through Cades Cove.

- Visiting the Amish community near Roanoke, Virginia. I love their simple life. Not to mention how good they cook! I also absolutely love Amish furniture. I would love to completely furnish my house with all wood furniture one day, Lord willing. =)

Hey everyone! Thought I'd write a quick post about how you can blog (and surf the Internet in general) faster.. =) Hope it's helpful to some of you. Please take the time to read if you don't already use Chrome, you won't regret it!!

Okay, first I'll start off by explaining why I thought I'd post this..I was looking at my blog stats the other day and noticed how many of my blog viewers used Internet Explorer(53%), as opposed to Google Chrome(32%) (or Firefox, Safari, Opera, etc)! So I thought I'd give y'all some info on Google Chrome - the fastest browser.

Anyway, onto the facts..(note: I also tested Opera, but none of you use it, so I didn't bother to post it's results here..although it got smoked by Google Chrome too. ;-) )

Here's why Google Chrome is the fastest and why you should switch!

1. Startup time(the time it takes you to get on your homepage after you click on the icon)

Chrome - .93 seconds WINNER (note: less than a second!!)
Internet Explorer - 2.12 seconds
Firefox - 2.09 seconds
Safari - 2.68 seconds

2. Downloading time(how long it takes you to download files, programs, videos pictures - everything)

Chrome - 14.32 seconds WINNER
Internet Explorer 38.34 seconds
Firefox - 17.19 seconds
Safari - 21.34 seconds

3. Overall Speed test(using "Peacekeeper Browser Benchmark")

Chrome - 4,541 points WINNER
Internet Explorer - 500 points
Firefox - 1,667 points
Safari - 2,334 points

The Doctrine of Grace

I'm going to start this out with a great illustration that I borrowed from Paul Washer. The story is about a friend of his, Charles Lighter. And from there I'll try to be as brief as possible today, since Supper is almost ready. =)

He walked into class, it was the last semester in Physics. It was the most difficult course on the face of the earth. And he walks in there with 5 other physics majors, they sit down, and they're trembling. The Professor walks in, looks at them, says "You men have been through all the courses of Physics in this University, and if you've gotten this far, it means you've done well. You all have an 'A'. Now let's just enjoy the material."

Now let's just change the scenaro a little for a moment. We have these 5 physics guys, who LOVE physics. I mean they LOVE it. They eat this stuff, drink this stuff, talk about it, and dream about it. I mean, these are PHYSICS GUYS. Now, there are 5 Math majors in the class now too. They hate it. I mean, they're MATH guys! They hate it!! But they've got to take the course. So the Professor walks in and says "Alright, everyone has an 'A' in the course, let's just enjoy this material. Now these 5 physics guys, they go "We got an 'A'? You mean we can just study this stuff for FUN!? You mean we can just pour our mind into this without any worry of flunking or failing?!? And just enjoy this material? We can just stay up all night DREAMING about this stuff!??" And the Physics teacher replies "Yeah, you got an 'A', now lets just enjot the material" The Math majors go "We got an 'A' in this class? We got an 'A'?? "Yeah." "You mean, we got an 'A'?? "Yes."

The Math majors walk out of the classroom and throw their books in the trash.

The Physics majors represent true Christians and the Math majors represent lost people. True Christians, upon hearing that they have been unconditionally and supernaturally pardoned from their sins, desire to live the rest of their lives according to God's will. The thought of continuing in sin is, like the Apostle Paul adamantly stated in Romans 6, completely absurd! Here, read it for yourself:

^"¹What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

²God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

³Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?" ~Romans 6:1-3

See what I mean? You can almost always(if not always, without exception) tell a true Christian by his/her attitude towards Grace.

Okay, I'm going to do something a little bit different today..I'm going to have a Bible Quiz. =) It will only have 3 questions, but you'll have to do a little reading before you will be able to answer them. I might make this a regular thing(once a week or something)...so we'll wait and see how it goes. Be sure to give me your opinion on it. =)

RULES: First, I want everyone who is going to participate to read the whole chapter of Romans 1(It's not a really long chapter..only 32 verses, so it shouldn't take a long time) Then, I want you to comment with your answers!

No cheating! This includes, but is not limited to: Googling the answers or the chapter, asking other people for the answers(nope, not even your parents or older siblings), and looking in Bible commentaries).

Back for a while

Well, I've been "gone" for a week now, but we didn't actually go anywhere. LOL. We were going to go, but my Dad got really sick the day before our "departure". So we postponed the trip for a week. But because of our computer fast(that ended today); although I have been here at home, I have not been able to post. I don't know if I will get in a post in between here and Monday or not(we're leaving Monday morning)..but we'll see. :)

Hello! :)

I decided to take off my blog playlist and just put a small one that plays manually on the sidebar instead. :) It only has about 4 songs on it, but they're all AWESOME, so I'm sure you won't have a problem listening to a few more than once!! (I know I sure don't!!) I Love the Wissmann family!!

I decided to do this for a few reasons..

1. It bugs me when I'm looking at blogs--I'm a multi-tasker, so it's usually several at once--and all of the music starts at once!! And it doesn't sound very nice with so many different types and different volumes all going at once!! "Do unto others"..haha! :D

2. The Wissmann family wasn't on playlist.com or themusichutch and they are my ultimate favorite!! So..I used their playlist widget instead..

3. I felt like experimenting! haha :)

How to Fall in Love with Jesus

Spend time with him! What do you do when you like someone and want to get to know them better? Spend time with them! Schedule time alone with him, listen to what he says to you, talk to him frequently!
Learn to get to know him! Do you fully know the character of God? Do you study what he's like? Are you aware of what pleases him and displeases him?
Treasure his Love letter to you! What would I was engaged and received a Love letter from my betrothed? Read it, reread it, reread it, and read it again!! Treasure it! Memorize it!
Understand what He's done for you! Are you fully aware of what Jesus Christ has done for you? Think about it. Everything he went through for you. From your creation to your Salvation--Jesus Christ went through Death itself for your Salvation--do you fully comprehend the significance of this??!!
Frequently tell him of your Love! What do you do when you love someone? Tell them so! :) If a Husband or Wife never told their spouse "I Love you", what would you think? It would be odd! It brings the Lord pleasure for you to express your affection toward him!
Demonstrate your Love by your Actions! Do you show God your Love on a daily basis by doing things for him?? He DIED for you; are you willing to LIVE for him???
Tell others about his Greatness! Do you praise his name daily? Do you tell others what He's done for you? Is his Mercy and Grace on the tip of your tongue? Do you

Be attentive of the gifts he gives you! Thank him for the showers of blessings that he pours upon you!! Appreciate them!
Journals of your time with Him--write songs, poems, or letters to him! I don't think this one needs any explaining--it's very simple! :)

Have any of you ever read the book of Job?? Well I started it about 3 days ago..right now I'm in chapter 21..and I must say, this Job sure makes us all look like baby Christians! Imagine what Faith and Love for God it would have taken to do what Job did!! Put your selves in Job's shoes..You're a very rich man, you have thousands of livestock, you have seven Sons and three Daughters. All of that gets taken away from you. Now you are a very poor man, you have no children, no cattle or sheep, and your friends all tell you that you've sinned against God and he is punishing you for it...
And yet, through all of this, Job stays totally faithful to the Lord. In fact, this is what he said:

"And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

The author then states,"In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly."

And God rewarded Job for it.."And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before."

Isn't that Amazing?? Oh that we would be like Job..

He's even back to annoying us, which is a GOOD thing, since he hasn't at all in the last 2 days. LOL. (Funny way to look at it, eh?) He's back to himself for sure.. :) Praise God!!

Hello,

Please keep my brother, Caleb, in your prayers. We had to rush him to the E.R. last night in the middle of church. He had 104 fever, chills, dizziness, cold and blotchy hands, a headache, tightness in his throat, difficulty breathing, and he was very lethargic. He couldn't even see the words on the Hymnal when we were singing. So they did a lot of tests on him last night, including Blood-work an E-ray, etc. They let him come home last night, but we have to go up there again today to find out the Blood-work results. We don't know what it is yet, but we should know later on. My Dad believes it was some sort of Virus.
